About Raja Michael Flores

Dr. Raja M. Flores is an accomplished thoracic surgeon and the Chairman of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. He is also known as the Steven and Ann Ames Professor in Thoracic Surgery. He is highly regarded in the field of thoracic surgery, particularly for his pioneering work in the treatment of mesothelioma and for establishing VATS lobectomy as the gold standard for the surgical treatment of lung cancer.

Dr. Flores has extensive experience with VATS lobectomy and has published his research on the procedure, which has been presented at many national and international meetings. He has also led several major studies and clinical trials on the multimodality management of malignant pleural mesothelioma, as well as innovative surgical techniques in minimally invasive thoracic surgery for lung cancer. He is currently the Principal Investigator of the Libby Epidemiology Research Program, a $4.8 million grant funded by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).

Dr. Flores obtained an undergraduate degree in biochemistry from New York University and his Medical Degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery Internship and General Surgery Residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, and his Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He also holds a Masters in Biostatistics from Columbia University.

He is a member of several medical and surgical societies and serves on several editorial boards. He is affiliated with several hospitals in the Mount Sinai Health System. He is certified in Thoracic Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
