About Charles B. Simone

Dr. Charles B. Simone, II, MD, FACRO, is an internationally renowned expert in the field of proton therapy for thoracic malignancies and reirradiation, as well as the development of clinical trial strategies and innovative research in thoracic radiation oncology and stereotactic body radiation therapy using traditional radiation therapy.

He holds several positions such as Research Professor, Chief Medical Officer of the New York Proton Center, and Full Member in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is a National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Department of Defense funded investigator who performs clinical and translational research investigating the benefits of proton therapy and traditional radiation therapy as part of multi-modality therapy for lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, thymic tumors, and other thoracic malignancies.

Dr. Simone completed his undergraduate and medical school training at the University of Pennsylvania, an internship in internal medicine, and residency training in radiation oncology at the National Cancer Institute, NIH, where he served as chief resident. He has held several positions in the past such as Chief of the Thoracic Oncology Service at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Director of the Penn Mesothelioma and Pleural Program, and Director of Clinical Research and Operations in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Penn.

He was then appointed Medical Director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center, and at the University of Maryland, he also served as Chair of the Clinical Research Committee for their Comprehensive Cancer Center, proton therapy Fellowship Director, and Director of the Stereotactic Radiation Therapy Program.

Dr. Simone has published over 480 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters, given over 385 scientific lectures to national and international audiences, and is the national Principal Investigator or Co-Chair of 8 NIH-funded cooperative group trials (5 NRG Oncology, 1 SWOG, 1 ECOG-ACRIN, 1 PCG). He is a three-time winner of the Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology (ARRO) Educator of the Year Award, and he has been elected for Fellowship in the American College of Radiation Oncology (FACRO).

Dr. Simone is a member of several professional organizations, including Proton Collaborative Group (PCG) President of the Board of Directors, Vice Chair of NRG Oncology’s Radiation Oncology Committee, and Chair of several committees and subcommittees such as ASTRO Lung Resource Panel Committee, PTCOG Gastrointestinal Subcommittee, and ACRO Recruitment Subcommittee among others. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Palliative Medicine and on the Editorial Boards of several journals.
