About Mark Ferguson
Dr. Mark K. Ferguson is a thoracic surgeon with expertise in diseases of the lungs, esophagus, and thymus. He is skilled in all techniques of lung and esophageal resection and has experience in managing airway obstruction and malignant pleural effusions. He has served on the boards and committees of various national societies and institutions, including the FDA and NIH.
As an accomplished author, Dr. Ferguson has written over 85 chapters in medical textbooks and has edited or written books on esophageal reconstructive surgery, failed anti-reflux therapy, and decision-making in thoracic surgery. He has also authored an atlas of general thoracic surgery and has written more than 250 papers or abstracts in medical journals. He currently serves as deputy editor for a cardiothoracic surgery journal and is on the board of three other journals.
His research interests include risk analysis, long-term outcomes after lung and esophageal resection, the development of simulation methods for surgical training, and advanced techniques in surgical education. He is a member of several medical societies, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, American Surgical Association, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, and General Thoracic Surgical Club.
He received his medical education from the University of Chicago Medical Center and Pritzker School of Medicine, completed his residency at the University of Chicago Medicine, and completed a fellowship at the same institution. He is currently practicing at UChicago Medicine Orland Park and Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM) in Hyde Park.
