About Richard Battafarano

Dr. Richard Battafarano is a highly accomplished medical professional with a wealth of education and experience in his field. He joins the Johns Hopkins Department of Surgery as Director of the Division of General Thoracic Surgery and the first Regional Director of General Thoracic Surgery. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, he was the Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical System.

Dr. Battafarano specializes in the treatment of benign and malignant diseases and lesions of the chest, including minimally invasive operations such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for lung and esophageal cancers. He also has a special interest in treating Barrett's esophagus, emphysema, mesothelioma, and paraesophageal hernias. His focus of research includes outcomes in the surgical management of early stage lung cancer patients with neuroendocrine histology, optimal management of lung cancer patients with mediastinal lymph node metastases, and the effect of survivin overexpression in the development of esophageal cancer.

Dr. Battafarano sees patients at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Health Care & Surgery Centers at Green Spring Station and White Marsh. He holds the titles of Regional Director of General Thoracic Surgery, Director of the Division of General Thoracic Surgery, and Associate Professor of Surgery. He is affiliated with the Departments of Surgery - General Thoracic Surgery and Surgery at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Esophageal Cancer Program, Lung Cancer Program, and Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.
